The Power of Laser Therapy: A Modern Boost to Your Dental Cleaning Appointment

Posted .

How are lasers used in dental cleaning appointments?

When most people think of dental cleaning, they picture traditional tools such as scalers and polishers. But dentistry has come a long way, and today’s technology allows us to offer more comfortable, effective and proactive treatment. One of our favorite new advancements is laser therapy for improved gum health.

Laser therapy uses targeted light energy to target and reduce harmful bacteria below the gumline, promotes healing and tissue regeneration, and reduces inflammation. This technique is used in addition to the traditional cleaning instruments your hygienist already uses to enhance your quality of care. Think of laser therapy as a powerful supplement to your routine dental cleaning: standard cleaning tools remove plaque and tartar buildup, while laser therapy takes it a step further by disinfecting the gum tissue and supporting your body’s natural healing process.

How does it work?

After removal of plaque and calculus (tartar), your hygienist will use a soft tissue laser around the gums. This low-level laser is comfortable, safe and minimally-invasive. What does the laser feel like? Most patients feel a warmth or mild tingling sensation during treatment. Your hygienist will explain the procedure in detail and will ensure your comfort throughout. Laser therapy is quick and effective, taking less than 10 minutes.

Who benefits from laser-assisted cleanings?

Laser therapy is a great option for many patients, but it’s especially beneficial for patients with signs of early or moderate gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), including deep pockets or bleeding gums. It is also beneficial in preventing progression of gum disease. Even patients with healthy gums can benefit from the additional bacterial reduction and tissue stimulation of laser gum therapy.

Why do we offer laser therapy?

That’s why we’ve incorporated laser therapy into our dental hygiene protocol to enhance and further personalize your care. It’s a small addition to your visit that can make a big difference in your gum health, both now and in the long-term.
