Invisalign aligners can be used to straighten misaligned or malpositioned (crooked) teeth in the general dentist’s office. These aligners help achieve orthodontic tooth movement, just as if you were to visit the orthodontist. Because the aligners are clear, they offer a more esthetically pleasing alternative to traditional metal braces.
For the Invisalign process, you will first see your dentist for an impression of your teeth and gums and have some photos taken. Invisalign aligners are then custom-made to fit your mouth. Now, each patient’s total treatment time with Invisalign varies depending on their specific dental needs, but the average treatment time is around 12 months, and Invisalign can be used on adults and teenagers.
When you are fitted for your first set of aligners, clear attachments are placed on the teeth so the aligners have something to grab onto. Do not fear; these attachments are removed at the end of treatment. As an Invisalign patient, you will need to visit your dentist every four to six weeks for a quick appointment to review your progress, make sure your teeth are moving as planned, and pick up your new aligners. You will change into a new pair of aligners every two weeks at home. Each new pair will be slightly different from the last, so you can see a gradual alignment of your teeth. With the Invisalign process you will feel pressure from the tooth movement taking place, but at least you know it is working!

If there is a discrepancy from what we were hoping to achieve, we can always have a new set of aligners made mid-treatment, or towards the end, to make sure the results are as you wanted.
Your aligners are removed while you eat and while you perform your normal oral healthcare routine of brushing and flossing. When they are worn 20 to 22 hours per day, the teeth will move as anticipated. At the completion of treatment, your dentist then makes a set of retainers to maintain the new position of your teeth. These retainers must be worn at night or your teeth will want to go back to where they were before treatment, and we can’t let them! With commitment, Invisalign treatment is a great alternative to conventional braces and you can see excellent results, fast.
